Manila, PHILIPPINES – On November 20, 2022, After an impressive opening ceremony, Ecuador got off to a winning start against hosts Qatar in the tournament’s opening match held at Al Bayt Stadium as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 kicked off.

A crowd of 67,372 watched the Group A match, where two goals from Enner Valencia helped South America win 2-0. 

The match marked the beginning of an exciting football festival that lasted 29 days and culminated in the final at Lusail Stadium on December 18th. The FIFA World Cup Games will take place in eight state-of-the-art stadiums as 32 nations vie for the world championship.

The 30-minute FIFA World Cup opening ceremony wowed thousands of attendees and billions of viewers worldwide. Narrated by Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman and features Jungkook of the South Korean supergroup BTS. The ceremony showcased Qatar’s culture and heritage and football’s ability to unite people from different countries and cultures.

The ceremony was attended by many special guests from Qatar, including Ghanim Al Muftah, Dana and Fahad Al Kubaisi, and was attended by hundreds of performers and tournament volunteers.

The ceremony consisted of eight parts and culminated in giant jerseys for all 32 participating nations, all mascots from FIFA World Cup history, including the live Qatar 2022 version, and giant inflatable emblems. Conceived as a joyful, contemporary and one-of-a-kind spectacle with a key unifying message, the ceremony was conceived by Executive Arti, CEO of Katara Studios, in collaboration with Creative Director Marco Baric and Artistic Director Angela Allo. It was produced by Stick Director Ahmed Al Baker.
